In this week’s Mentor Spotlight Interview, we are happy to introduce David Geddes, CEO & President for the International Sports Technology Association. David is a true change agent with a burning heart for innovative sports applications. He has started multiple companies and holds extensive knowledge on the topics of strategic planning, product development, financial analysis, and the significance of innovation in the sports industry.
Introduction: What is your background?
My business background is based on entrepreneurship, startups, and innovation. I have been working since I was 15 years old, often working two jobs. I appreciate the energy it requires to transform great ideas into profitable businesses. My father and his father were innovators in their business efforts, so creativity and ingenuity come naturally for me.
What would you consider your greatest achievement?
My greatest achievement is my personal character development. I have worked hard to be creative as an artist, to think like a scientist, and to act like a champion. I have developed courage and inner strength to do what is right. The type of person you become or wish to be can be your greatest achievement. The very best of humanity requires dedication, thoughtfulness, and intellect. We are tested every day. Focus on becoming your greatest achievement, it takes work.
What made you interested in joining Qatar SportsTech as a mentor?
Qatar has taken a chance, a very public chance, to help grow the sports technology business sector by helping to fund, mentor, and launch new companies. I share the same passion to educate young people, new companies, or great ideas so that technology can impact athlete health, fan engagement, and brand involvement across all sports. I feel that sharing and transferring of knowledge is important.
What excites you the most about SportsTech?
The world cannot have a vibrant global sports technology sector without defining and labeling what it is.. so, I get very excited when I speak to other influential global sports technology leaders who are interested in working together to help unify and standardize global ideas about sports technology. I get excited when I think about a healthy business sector and a strong career field.
What expertise are you going to support the QST startups with?
I provide evaluations of products, strategies, markets, and I make introductions to buyers at the proper time. My creative and technical communication abilities will help advise and edit targeted messaging for North & Latin America. I have plenty to experience to share…
Any final words of wisdom, that you would like to give to aspiring SportsTech entrepreneurs?
Great investors do not invest in products, they invest in people. Products and processes can be corrected. It is much harder to fix people. Relationships between your buyers and your brand are key, so make sure you are listening to your buyers. And finally, learn what a pivot is, you don’t have to be in sports technology to be successful, because, your greatest achievement is ‘you’.
