A warm welcome to our latest mentor, Timothy Koning, Sport and Performance psychologist at YAAP and Co-founder of Haarlem Bijdeles. Timothy is a true sports enthusiast and an expert in the fields of Entrepreneurship & Business Model Innovation, Pitching & Storyboarding, Teambuilding.
What is your background?
As a child, I was always crazy of different sports. From Karate to tennis and from swimming till baseball. In the end, I chose the sport I loved the most: football/soccer. I will be remembered as a hard-working midfielder who grew over the years. In the end, I was accepted at the Johan Cruyff University for the league which I played in with my team. The Johan Cruyff University is mainly focused on Sports & Marketing. In these years I also started my first company (before knowing it would grow into the company it is right now) in tutoring children from 10 till 20 years old. This is where my love for entrepreneurship, helping people to grow and learning was combined. After I finished my bachelor at the Johan Cruyff University I started another bachelor: Psychology. This is where I truly found my love for understanding the human being as a whole. I ended up doing a Masters in Sport- and Performance Psychology, a master where I could combine my passions: entrepreneur and understanding people.
As a performance consultant/psychologist and entrepreneur I try to dig deep. Understanding the choices, understanding why the person is developing this kind of business, does it fit? In my opinion, your business is an extension of you, so understanding where you stand for, what values you support and the things you love will bring you closer to your success and your business plan.
What would you consider your greatest achievement?
When I read this question I automatically noticed a defensive mechanism working for me. I am not used to celebrating my achievements or be proud of stuff/things I achieve. This is definitely something I can work on. I rather open up about my mistakes so other people won’t make the same mistakes, I want to help them. On the other hand, letting people make their mistakes will help them experience ‘pain’ that can help them to change certain things. So sometimes it’s better to observe and use the experience as a catalysator And I think this is where I am most proud of, not selling the stuff or companies I have, but selling me, my personal characteristics, my person with both strong qualities and soft spots. Opening up, talking with friends, family, and clients about my life, failures and growth and let them be who they want to be.
I hope I always keep a certain distance to help people in their own way.
What made you interested in joining Qatar SportsTech as a mentor?
The combination of innovation, giving start-ups opportunities and sport made it easy to follow the company. When I discussed several topics with Jason Esseboom I became enthusiastic about the way you guys work, the broadness of the topics you touch upon and the special interest in Sport psychology. Where in my opinion many chances are available.
What excites you the most about Sports Technology?
In my opinion, helping to do correct movement to avoid injuries (Movement Correction), visualizing training results and motivating people to spend more time on sport are some exciting features of sports technologies.
What expertise are you going to support the QST startups with?
A different mindset, thinking a few steps ahead and my experience as an entrepreneur: how to succeed through your own personal characteristics.
Any final words of wisdom, that you would like to give to aspiring SportsTech entrepreneurs?
Ask for help, you don’t need to do anything by yourself. And be you, if it’s enough it’s enough and that’s okay. Flourish your performance by being you not by trying someone who you are not.
