Doha, 2nd December: Qatar SportsTech(QST), the Doha-based sports industry startup accelerator hosted its second Selection Day at the Torch hotel where 10 best startups were selected to enter our award winning accelerator program.
After three months of international scouting, 40 countries spanning 6 continents, and reviewing over 500+ applications, 10 selected startups are admitted into our award winning accelerator program for the year 2020.
At the event, the day started with 21 startups pitching their ideas in front of our program partners and mentors. This was followed by 1:1 sessions with our world-leading organizations from the most influential sporting and innovation organizations in Doha such as Qatar Development Bank, Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, Olympic Committee of Qatar, Aspire Academy, Aspetar, Qatar Airways, Qatar Foundation, 360 Nautica and Tech Angels, as well as international supporting organizations such as PSG, NBA, Courtside Investments, IDO Investments, and Startupbootcamp. These sessions gave the mentors insights into their business models and professional aspirations. The first steps have already been carried out to establish collaborations between the corporate partners and the new innovations.
Our Selection Committee, consisting of our program partners: QDB, QFC, Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, Aspire Foundation, BeIN Media Group, and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, reviewed the startups and selected 10 which aligned with their goals and objectives.
Senior Director of Basketball Strategy at NBA, Tom Ryan said, “QST has organized an incredible event and put in a lot of energy and investment from the stakeholders and it is really impressive”.
“The motivation behind what Qatar is doing for the World Cup is good synergy with what we are doing with our product”, says Julian Holtzmann from Torq Labs who have developed the world’s first smart leggings.
The 10 chosen startups are admitted into QST’s award-winning 3-month accelerator program that provides all the tools to take a startup from its initial launch to developing a highly scalable business with substantial revenue growth. Moreover, the selected startups will also have access to QST’s global network of entrepreneurs, investors, and corporate partners. As Qatar SportsTech is moving into its second cohort of accelerating sportstech startups, the QST team, mentors, and corporate partners are all looking forward to facilitating innovation in the sportstech startup ecosystem.
Heba Q. Al Masri, Program Director of Qatar SportsTech expressed her excitement saying “Selection Day is a great opportunity for our partners, mentors, and the team to get acquainted with the startups before selecting the ones that are suitable for our accelerator program. It provides a good insight for all startups because they develop valuable business connections and get insights that help them better understand the market scope in Doha and improve their businesses”.
